Horological Tools

Index Head

(A) This index head was designed and built by a couple of clockmakers who were  frustrated with the cumbersome and time consuming set-ups involved with  common machine tools. With this device most gears can be cut in fewer than  30 minutes including set up time. The head is designed to fit directly on  the bed of micro mills such as the Sherline or be placed in the dialed vise  of larger mills such as a Bridgeport. Set up on the Sherline is approximately 5 minutes and is less than a minute on a Bridgeport. The  headstock is 8mm making it compatible with the watchmakers lathe.  The index head comes with 7 plates: 40, 56, 60, 64, 72, 84 and 96, one single tooth cutter, cutter arbor, 8mm 1/4 wheel arbor, two 1 3/4 inch  backing plates and two 2 inch wheel blanks.(B)

While these plates cover the  majority of jobs, index plates are available in any size.

8mm wheel arbors (C) are available in 1/4, 7/32, 3/16, 5/32 and 1/8 inch.

(D) Backers are available  in 1 3/4 and 1 1/2 inch and come with a 3/16 inch hole.

Cutter mandrels are also available separately and come with mounting screws for 7mm and 1/4 inch inside diameter cutters.

Price: Index Head $550.00, Arbors $15.00, Backers $5.00, Cutter Mandrel $20.00

Wheel Blanks

These wheel blanks are made of full hard leaded brass (Composition 353 H#4). Full hard brass both has more strength and machines better than half hard  brass. It was the brass traditionally used in Clock making until industry as a whole cast it aside. The following sizes are available in both spoked and plain; 1 3/8 x 1/16 inch, 1 3/4 x 1/16 inch, 1 7/8 x 1/16 inch, 2 x 1/16  inch and 3 1/4 x 1/8 inch. Spoked wheel blanks come with a predrilled 7/32  inch hole. Brass pieces are available upon request. Price: See Table Below.

Size Spoked Blank
1/8 x 3 1/4 $5.00 $4.75
1/16 x 2 $4.75 $4.00
1/16 x 1 7/8 $4.25 $3.25
1/16 x 1 3/4 $3.75 $2.75
